Pipilotti Rist is a multimedia artist who specialises in film and multimedia installation. Rist describes art film as a handbag because you can put anything in, you can incorporate sculpture painting performance and practically any other media into it and combine them to make them one cohesive piece. This ideology is something I personally connect with as i would describe myself as a multimedia artist who would like to experiment with digital media to combine all forms of visual art. All these elements put together could be described as wilfully chaotic but rist pieces them together with a certain finesse which makes them cohesive. Rists work is characterised by its vibrant colours and fast pace and was quite the opposite to the bleak video art of the late 20th century when she began creating digital pieces. The abstract nature of her pieces especially the digital ones is something that really intrigues me. Her work is often described as abstract and kaleidoscopic. Colour is an extremely important aspect of Rists work because for her colours represent life and joy as well as playfulness. That abstract quality is something I’d like to incorporate into my own digital pieces as it was something i had never considered before researching her work.
