Leonora Carrington was an English/Mexican painter who was one a prominent member of the surrealist movement. Like other surrealists Carrington’s work was strongly influenced by the unconscious mind and dream imagery however she was also influenced by a variety of themes such as; mythology, alchemy and folk art. Many of Carrington’s pieces also revolve round themes including exploring her own female sexuality rather than the other surrealists slightly more narrow views of the subject. Horses are a motif often found in her work as a symbol of her early childhood, she creates a narrative around horses as psychic guides to a young heroine in many of her pieces. Carrington’s use of hybrid figures is reminiscent of my own experimentation into strange creatures which range from humanoid to beastly along with autobiographical symbolism.
